Seven Deadly Sins

One of our blog post from several weeks ago about "master" bedrooms becoming "owner's" bedrooms got us thinking about our local market and what builders and architects are calling the "master" and other spaces here in Denver. We found several designers taking a more literal approach and calling  bedrooms "sleep" or "dream" and other rooms, such as the kitchen, simply "cook." Scott Sudik, one of our principals here at Godden|Sudik,  likes to call  what could traditionally be referred to as an "outdoor living room"  a "Colorado Room" and the entry off the garage an "owner's entry."

With all these liberties taken, we thought we would have a little fun with this idea of "re-naming" spaces and have one of our architects try to use the Seven Deadly Sins to call out rooms on a floor plan. See what Rick Sall , one of our designers,  came up with below!

Is the "Master" Bedroom Gone For Good?

A Beautiful Master Retreat in Loveland, Colo.

According to Michael Neibauer, in his recent article, In Residential Real Estate, Bid Farewell to the 'Master Bedroom,' featured in the Washington Business Journal, after surveying 10 major Washington area home builders, six no longer use the term "master" on floor plans. The term has instead been replaced with "owner's suite" or "owner's bedroom." The article traces this trend to negative connotations associated with the word "master," which implies masculinity and ownership of  another. However, even with builders making an attempt at political correctness, the new terminology  hasn't tricked down quite yet. Neibauer  says, after an unscientific poll of  local area homeowners, none surveyed could "recall a real estate agent referring to the "owner's bedroom." It was "master" across the board." So what is the future of our beloved "master" bedroom? We have seen many of our clients following this trend too.

"Live Forward" at Century Communites Candelas

Plan 4014 Elevation C

Earlier this month, Century Communities opened their newest community at Candelas in Arvada, Colo.

This new master planned community is receiving an overwhelming amount of press, including an article featured in Builder Magazine, talking about the community's  "live forward" attitude. Our very own Paul Brady, part of the design team, is quoted as saying, "Century was looking for something different for an area that’s a bit more progressive-leaning” in terms of what first-time and move-up home buyers want.
